Etta James is my number one inspiration/role model.  Strong, soulful, bold and always making a statement with her raspy words and edgy style.  She is known for her powerful pipes, suggestive stage antics, sassy attitude and sultry personality.  If you look back her fashion sense was equally as intense.  This vintage vixen wasn’t afraid to take risks vocally or when it came to her particular Hoochie Coochie wardrobe.  Ms. James had a cool about her that moves me in more ways then one – Rocking Me Baby!  Her bluesy lyrics scream confident, sex and simply makes you feel like a W.O.M.A.N who is self-assured!  The plunging necklines, form fitting dresses – showing off sexy curves, and lots and lots of sparkling bling bling motivates me to always step outside of the box.

Talking about being bold and making a statement, stepping outside of the box -  brings me right into… who is ‘Thursday Friday’?  They are turning the handbag industry inside out with their “anti spend all your money on a designer bag” trend.   You can spend thousands of dollars on a Balenciaga bag OR spend $35 on this new, reusable tote with an image of the fabulous Balenciaga bag screen printed on it!  Being a frugal fashionista myself I know my bank account can’t fund a Hermes bag, but this little number sure comes close for a fraction of the price.

I’ve spent countless hours flipping through my mom’s old photo albums.  Dreaming of an era of wide legs, platforms, cheerful florals, Janis Joplin, florescent colors, psychedelic prints, the Blues, denim jackets, maxi dresses that just make you want to roll around in the grass, nautical stripes and of course the dramatic fake eyelashes!  It inspires me to take the 2012 sexed up “70′s” vibe and combine that with the look in my mother’s albums.  Remember to take trends for what they are but then make them your own.  Fashion doesn’t have to be an all or nothing deal.  It can be a subtle tie dye scarf here and a feather accessory there.

Let the sun shine in.  This way of dressing is here, it’s bright and it’s staying so let’s work it.  Always think in terms of layers. Take bright tones, tribal prints, knits, nautical stripes, even pops of white, and apply in layers that are appropriate for you.

I’m a fan of vintage tees, but wearing them with my same ol’ stuff  just wasn’t doing it for me.  But instead of tossing them and buying more “now” tops I just added some staple pieces to jazz these old, distressed tees up.  Lately I’ve been spending more of my style budget on “wardrobe building“ then the mentality of ‘let’s max out the Amex on an entire new wardrobe’.  I’m sure you all have at least one vintage tee in your closet.  Take the tee, add a classic blazer (best investment I’ve ever made), a Chan Luu scarf (no need to justify that purchase, it literally will pay for itself),  tuck the tee into a wide leg jean from Hudson showing a Kim White basic belt.  And just like that you will take old 70′s with some new 2012 70′s on a budget. I don’t have an endless budget for luxury items but do believe in owning a few key pieces that can be used as a strong baseline. These investment pieces should spruce up my wardrobe while standing the test of time and style next to my label-less items.

I turned to Willow Street’s new virtual stylist program to advise on which key clothing items would fit best into my existing wardrobe and lifestyle.

For professional stylist help, I simply filled out a form where I provided Willow Street with information regarding my size, current fit challenges, style goals, and favorite designers. Shortly after, a Willow Street stylist emailed a photo of suggested merchandise and a styling guide full of fashion tips based around the selected items.

When my Willow Street package came in the mail, I was thrilled to try on the designer pieces my stylist chose based on my style file submission.

Items included the Hudson jean, Vince blouse, Only Hearts shimmer tank, Chan Luu cashmere scarf, Kim White 3 way belt, Gorjana long disc necklace, and Viv and Ingrid double tear drop wire earring.

I quickly tried on all the designer items and loved how the colors and fabrics flowed together in such an effortlessly elegant manner. My Willow Street stylist did a wonderful job with judging my size for each piece as well. Despite the jean size I provided, she sent a size up for the Hudson jean noting the brand tends to run a little small.

While I appreciated the single look created from these designer pieces, I needed them to mold into my existing wardrobe in a more versatile fashion. I began mixing the items with my current closet and lifestyle.

The Hudson Jean’s skinny shape molded to my legs creating a comfortable fit with sleek lines. This jean could be accompanied by anything from a structured button up dress shirt to a sexy tank. The dark wash quickly meshed with a variety of items I already own making the Hudson jean a denim staple.

The Vince blouse paired with one of my many pencil skirts illuminates professional appeal. Then to take this blouse from the office to a girls night out, I simply switched out the skirt for a bright white skinny jean and fun heels with matching statement jewelry.

Combining the Chan Luu cashmere scarf, Only Hearts tank, Gorjana necklance, and Viv and Ingrid wire earring produced a wave of gray and metallic silver tones. Paired again with my own white skinny jean, created a clean look. My red Dooney and Burke clutch was added for a finishing touch and punch of personality.

This Only Hearts shimmer tank is quickly becoming one of my favorite pieces from Willow Street. Tanks are fantastic layering pieces and easily transition from the shell of a three piece office suit to the centerpiece of a dinner date outfit after hours.

Here are some Easy Layering Tips:

If you can see your belt loops you should probably be wearing a belt.

If you ears are pierced you should always have an earring in.  Anything from a stud, a hoop or chandelier earring will do.

A wedge shoe or sandal will go with just about any pant in your casual wardrobe.  We love a chunky wedge with a crop pant, a short, a skinny jean and a wide leg.

Chunky jewelry makes a statement..period.  Don’t be afraid to go bold!

4.  Citrus in Style.  These poppy orange Luce Shorts from Vince look adorable wit this oversized tangerine and cream striped Daphne tee from Sanctuary.  Accessorize with an oversized gold earring like the Paisley Drop Earring from Gorjana and a fun bracelet.

5.  Transition in style.  This grey and white striped v neck Drew Top from Joie looks great with a jean or a short.  We put it with a skinny blue colored jean a cute charm hoop from Gorjana.
