Fall in my opinion is the best season of the year for many reasons; leaves falling, hot organic teas, Halloween, chunky sweaters and colored jeans.

This Fall it’s all about being a gem.  Some colors that immediately come to my mind are sapphire, ruby and jade. Every designer is running with a splash of color this season one way or another.  Don’t be a window shopper and shy away thinking jewel toned denim is too funky or too youthful.   You can style colored jeans to make a show stopping statement or tone them down for a sophisticated approach.  To go glam -sport a metallic shoe and a halter top or keep it casual with a grey tunic and a riding boot.

I think we can all say we wear too much black.  I guarantee 90% of us are in a black hole when it comes to our existing Fall wardrobe.  Go through your closet and get back to me, lemme know.  Break out or into some gem tones for fall , there are no rules, anything goes.

This fall be a gem (gem; 1. Valued for it’s beauty), shimmer, shine through your soul, pop some color and start your Fall fashion binge.

As the hot days of summer wind down, we at Willow St. are so lucky to get the early buzz on what is hot for fall by just opening the pile (and I do mean PILE) of boxes that we receive daily from our trusty UPS man John.

  • Thank goodness for fashion, its the only thing that makes letting go of summer do-able.

We here at Willow St. all look to Lezli (aka ”the big b”) to find out what trends are coming for each new season, what styles look best on us and really everything about how to dress.  She is the first one in the store to embrace the new trends every season, and to show us all how to wear them. That being said, we thought who better to help us do our first installment of  Willow St. do’s and don’ts than the boss lady herself.

Here we have our list of top do’s and don’ts to guide you from the dog days of summer into all the fabulous fashions of fall!

  • Do add some color to your wardrobe | add some colored pants or jeans this season. This trend is everywhere and can be worn in a skinny style or in a wide leg so it will work for many body types

  •  Do get your fur on | we love the shearling trend and the way to get the look this season is with a sherpa style vest.  Faux or real, this look is easy and can double as inner and outer wear.
  • Do get a little matchy matchy | we know this is going to be hard but try pairing your colored jeans with a matching print on top or a great argyle sweater and embrace a bit of preppy for fall.
  • Do transition some of your faves | make your summer favorites last into the fall. Try wearing summer’s maxi skirts with one of this seasons chunky open weave sweaters and a pair of flat boots or booties.
  • Do rock a poncho | this season ponchos are making a come back so why not embrace a bit of this mexican or navajo inspired trend. Try it with your skinny jeans to keep it modern.

  • Don’t be afraid of color | fall is all about color so don’t be afraid to experiment with all the berry and grape shades that the season has to offer
  • Don’t down size an over sized top or sweater, the look is supposed to be baggy so go for it!
  • Don’t over do chunky jewelry | with the advent of the big jewelry trend this season, it is easy to get carried away. Rule of thumb is stick with one large peice ie a necklace or a bracelet and add some small accents around it.
  • Don’t stick to one style | with so many different looks to choose from (preppy, bohemian, 70′s chic) step outside of your fashion box and try on all the styles that this season has to offer.
  • Don’t be afraid of prints | prints are everywhere this season from printed tops with colored jeans to missoni inspired knits from Willow St. favorite Mike Gonzalez. Why not be on trend and add a few.

Inspired by the June issue of Italian Vogue and sexy celebs like Kim K. and J. Lo, we here at Willow St. started to think and talk about our favorite curvy customers and how they dress to best accentuate their coveted hourglass shapes. We came up with a few of our curvy dressing rules to live by and have compiled them here for all of you.

J. Lo

1.  Buy clothes that fit…especially jeans – when your clothes fit it shows off your curves as opposed to adding bulk with extra fabric.  Try a jean with a higher waist like the Hutton or Amber styles by Citizens of Humanity. These styles not only have a higher waist, but also feature a boot cut leg for a well proportioned look.

2.  Show off your waist – whether you belt it or add a short cardigan, it is so flattering to a curvy girl to highlight the smallest part of the body. In most cases, this is the waist and it can be shown off in many ways. Try adding a cropped cardigan from Laurie B to a maxi skirt and tank to highlight the slimmest part of the waist or add a belt to a maxi dress for an easy way cinch in the middle.

3.  Ruching is a great shaper – Like magic, some well placed ruching can be a fantastic way to slim down your waist while adding some interest. Try a well tailored pant with a brand new ruched v-neck from Bailey 44 to cinch in your waist while looking completely polished.

4.  Heels, heels, heels – As obvious as this one seems, we thought high heels needed to be mentioned because we all agreed that it the easiest way to accentuate any woman’s shape curvy or otherwise. Heels not only lengthen the legs, but also add a certain confidence that makes us stand up just a little bit taller. Whether it is a wedge or platform, strappy or stiletto heels make any outfit better and any woman look sexier.

5.  Accessories – A well placed scarf or long necklace can not only divert attention from problem areas, but can also change the look of an outfit completely. Try a beautiful scarf from Chan Luu with a simple white tank and a well fit pair of khakis from G1 to add some interest and maybe hide an area that you don’t want to show off.

 Happy summer dressing….hope this helps!
